Auto reaction, or being on autopilot, refers to a state in which our behavior is driven by unconscious habits shaped by our beliefs. In this state, we do not truly respond to situations but instead react from our emotional and physical habits without conscious thought or control.
When we are on autopilot, our feelings, emotions, and thoughts ‘have us’. This means that we are not in control of them, and they dictate our behavior and reactions. To break free from this cycle, we must become aware of and interrupt our auto reactions and instead consciously choose to shape or sponsor our thoughts, emotions, and feelings. By doing so, we become the masters of our own experience and can respond effectively to life in alignment with our conscious intentions.
This requires us to recognize when we are on autopilot (STOP), become present and consciously investigate what is operating beneath the surface (LOOK), and then make a deliberate choice about how to respond to the situation based on our vision or what we want to create (CHOOSE).
In transformational trainings such as [re]WIRED for Peace, we call this process 'STOP-LOOK-CHOOSE,' and it is key to operating in the Growth Cycle of life, where we are at cause for our life, rather than being thrown by auto reactions and living life at effect in the Maintenance Cycle.
